| 2000AD
appeared on the British comic market in 1977 and was the first British
comic to compete on a level with the popular American titles. Aimed
at the youth market, 2000AD appealed to the Punk generation with it's
dark and gritty science fiction oriented tales, set in a near future
of post apocalyptic urban decay. The February debut of the comic was
heralded by a TV advert featuring the green skinned alien known as
Tharg, who throuout the years has continued with the comic in his editorial
role. |

| The
comic was an instant hit with readers, and issue two saw the introduction
of Judge Dredd future lawman of Megacity one, a post nuclear New York.
2000AD was the first British comic to credit it's artists and writers
and also differed from earlier comics in that it used five or six pages
per story instead of the more traditional three or four page format.
The comics also were instilled with a particularly British sense of
humour, and readers will notice a refreshing difference from the brassy
American superhero titles. |
| The
main feature to begin with was a new Dan Dare, preciously seen in Eagle
Comic and revived from suspended animation into the year 2177. In 1978
2000AD was combined with the short lived comics Starlord and Tornado,
from the pages of Starlord Strontium Dog was introduced and also Robusters.
2000AD stories have been re-printed for the american market in several
series by QC Comics. |
