The History of Marvel Comics- The 1990s and Beyond

The Early nineties where a whirl of corporate take- overs and financial wrangling for the Marvel empire. The prolific flow of new titles and crossovers of previous years led to a decline in the market. The proliferation of battle scarred, heavily armed, cybernetic characters and a confusion of time twisting crossovers had left the Marvel Universe in disarray and a new generation of comicbook readers where not buying into this. Marvel responded by producing a range of retrospective comics such as X- Men the Hidden Years and Avengers Forever that reaffirmed Marvel's foundation stones whilst allowing writers a solid platform for new material. Marvel began its Ultimate range of comics depicting heroes in a traditional Marvel universe without the convoluted trappings of the 1980s and the early 90s. The late nineties at Marvel are marked by the work of Joe Quesada creator of the Marvel Knights series and Joe became Editor in Chief in 2000. With Movie franchises for X- Men and Spiderman well on the way the close of the nineties has marked a rise in interest in Marvel Comics, helped by the success of numerous Animated Cartoon TV Series. More movies are on their way featuring Marvel favourites such as the Incredible Hulk, Daredevil and sequels are planned for the successful X- Men and Spiderman movies. Now in the 21st century, Marvel is set to remain the defining force in the ever evolving world of comicbooks and superheroes.
