He was recruited by Callisto to join the Morlocks, the mutants that inhabited the New York underground, He became their mutant tracker, to sniff out other mutants to swell their ranks, but the weak and stunted Caliban was an outcast even amongst this society of outcasts. Caliban sensed the presence of other mutants at a night club one night, these mutants turned out to be Dazzler, Storm and Kitty Pride of the X- Men. Caliban fell in love with Kitty and some time later during a conflict between the Morlocks and the X- Men he kidnapped her. Kitty promised to stay with him if he would help the X- Men defeat the Morlocks and Caliban agreed. Kitty was to have married him but Caliban, realising that she did not love him allowed her to leave. During the massacre of the Morlocks by Mr. Sinister's Marauders, Caliban was rescued by X- Factor, he joined them to avenge his fellow Morlocks, and help them track young mutants to bring into X- Factor's fold for safety during this period of mutant unrest. After being offered great power to overcome his enemies by the Mutant warlord Apocalypse, Caliban was genetically enhanced and became Apocalypse' Hell hound, and then Death, leader of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. When the Horsemen were beaten by the X- Men, Caliban joined X- Force. Later Caliban was again mutated by Apocalypse becoming larger and more aggressive as Pestilence, new leader of the Four Horsemen, the horsemen and Apocalypse were defeated once more and Caliban resumed his original small size childlike personality.
