As a child
Jean was playing with a friend in the street, The little girl
chased a ball into the roadway and was struck by a car, Jean
ran to her side and was suddenly inside her friends mind, Jean
watched helplessly as her friend died. This traumatic incident
and the sudden emergence of her mutant powers drove the young
Jean to the brink of madness and her parents enlisted the services
of Professor Charles Xavier, secretly a mutant telepath himself
who was able to help Jean by suppressing her powers and allowing
her to grow into them naturally. Charles became her teacher
and Jean the first in the team of mutant super heroes that would
soon be known to the world as the X- men. From the beginning
Jean became close with fellow team mate Scott Summers, and is
was soon clear to all that it was more than just friendship.
Throughout the early days of the X- Men, Jean's telekinetic
powers grew and developed although Professor Xavier still held
back the telepathic side of her powers. After the battle with
the living Island Krakoa, the ranks of the X- Men were swelled
with new members and Jean left the team and Scott now its leader
although still remained in close contact. Jean was later kidnapped
by a mad scientist and taken to the Moon. The X- Men raced to
the rescue but their spacecraft was damaged and Jean used her
telekinetic powers to save them. In the process Jean absorbed
a fatal dose of radiation and died. At the moment of death however
a cosmic entity known as the Phoenix Force took over her body
and a new being was born. Gone was marvel Girl and in her place
the all powerful Phoenix. Phoenix's agenda became clear when
she saved reality from the mad emperor D' Ken and the M'Kraan
Crystal Phoenix had saved Jean so that she could protect the
Multiverse. But life is never that simple and after having her
mind corrupted by Jason Wingarde AKA the mutant villain Mastermind
and the Hellfire Club, Phoenix became Dark Phoenix and in a
power hungry act consumed a star destroying a civilisation of
five billion existing on its orbiting planet. Phoenix was hunted
down by the forces of the Shi'ar in a battle on the surface
of the Moon, the X- men tried to protect Phoenix against the
Shi'ar but were wildly outnumbered. Phoenix destroyed herself
to save the universe from the Dark Phoenix force and that it
seemed was the end of Jean Grey. Scott married Madelyne Prior
who reminded him of Jean and she bore him a son Christopher
Nathan Summers. But Jean was not dead Phoenix had placed her
damaged body into suspended animation after Jean had died in
the spacecraft and she was found by the Avengers and revived.
Scott was soon back with her and the original X- Men reformed
as X- Factor. Scott thought Madelyne and the X- Men dead, but
she became the Goblin Queen and it soon transpired that she
was actually a clone of Jean created by Mr. Sinister to bear
Cyclops a son. Madelyne died and Jean reabsorbed her life force
and memories of her life with Scott. Nathan was later infected
by the Techno - Virus and Scott and Jean took him to the future
to to be cured and raised by a group of warriors called the
Askani. The child grew up and later returned to the present
as Cable. Jean and Scott were married and during their honeymoon
were snatched to the future where they spent time raising Nathan
as Slym and Redd with Mother Askani an incarnation of Racheal
known as Phoenix, Jeans Daughter from another dimension. Rachel
died and Scott and Jean returned to the present and the X- Men
Jean now taking the name Phoenix once more. |
