Marvel Comics on the Screen- Captain America Republic Pictures Weekly Cinema Serial 1944
Starring Dick Purcell as Captain America, this the 32nd Republic serial was screened as fifteen black and white episodes in cinemas as part of the weekly Saturday Matinee. Tough attorney Grant Gardner was in reality the the super hero Captain America, battling villains with his scientifically enhanced super powers. The series basically forgot the Captain's comic book past changing his name and ignoring his wartime adventures.Instead of a shield he carried a gun and fought enemies such as the Scarab. He was accompanied by his sidekick Bucky Barnes played by Lionel Atwill. This was Dick Purcell's final role as he died of a heart attack the following year.
