"The Fat Owl closed his eyes blissfully
and a low rumbling snore began to escape his lips. A little
while later, he was again surprised by Mr. Quelch's heavy hand
descending upon his shoulder. You were sleeping, boy!"
hooted Mr. Quelch. Who-me? No, I wasn't, sir," yelped Bunter.
I er.. I just closed my eyes for a moment.Er .I was feeling faint,
sir! Lack of food and all that. ."
Silence!" thundered Mr. Quelch. He moved out to the front
of the class and tapped his pointer against the map hanging on
the wall. If you were paying attention, then, Bunter," he
went on sarcastically. Perhaps you wouldn't mind telling us what
you've learned. Now, where is Sydney?"
Who?" said Bunter blankly. Sydney!" roared Mr. Quelch
irritably. Where is Sydney? Come along. we're all waiting to
hear ! " I don't know where he is,"
gurgled Bunter. I didn't even know he was lost! |
"The class howled with laughter.
Silence!"
screamed Mr. Quelch, lashing his " I don't care if I don't
have. any dinner," he thought. " I'll be so jolly hungry
I'll be sure towin that ten quid tonight ! "He added another
dirty blot to the page in frontofhiR1, rubbed it out with an
inky forefinger and wrote another two lines. " I won't
have any tea, either," he said aloud." It'll be worth
it. I'll get the cash. and have afree blow-out of pies anyway.
It'll be like goinginto training. like the Olympic champions
do."He finished his lines and waddled out." I ain't
half hungry, though,"
he murmured." Didn't have much breakfast. only four eggsand
ten rashers. Stingy lot. wouldn't let me.have any more."He
wandered into the dining hall-" A plate of food has been
put aside for you,Hunter," snapped Mr. Quelch." Don't
want it," said Hunter. The dining hall became still and silent." Don't
want your dinner, Hunter?" gurgledMr. Quelch." I'm
off grub,"
said Hunter. " Not eating."" He's ill, sir,"
yelled one boy." Never known Bunter refuse grub, sir,"
saidanother. " He's off his rocker," yelled yet another.Mr.
Quelch beckoned to}ones Minor and Robert-son."
Take Bunter to the sick bay," he ordered. " TellMatron
the lad is gravely ill. Tell her he'srefused FOOD! Tell her to
call a doctor."" What the matter with everyone?"
howledBunter. " I'm not ill, there's nothing wrong withme!"" You've
